Preventing Mental Deterioration

by admin on July 10, 2009

Fears of Alzheimer’s Disease and cognitive dysfunction are gradually becoming more rampant. The thought of slowing degenerating until all of your precious memories are gone is not a pleasant one. Further complications such as a family history of mental deterioration can lead many to begin fearing old age.

However, there are steps that you can take to make sure that your mind stays sharp. Your brain is actually a muscle and if you don’t use it, just like a natural muscle, it will begin to get out of shape. It is never too early to start exercising your brain.

Turn off the Television

Recent studies have shown that people who watch an inordinate amount of television tend to be more likely to develop cognitive problems later in life. Since watching television is a passive activity, where your brain does not need to actually think, you can be wasting hours on programming and causing harm to your brain.

Try to limit your television watching to less than 2 hours a day, and even less than that if possible.

Grab Some Puzzles

Since you won’t be watching television as much, you can begin to fill your free time with exercises for your brain that are also fun. Try to spend your time solving puzzles, doing crosswords, playing trivia games, etc.. In short, use your brain instead of being a passive participant, chained to your television for entertainment.

Eat the Right Foods

Staying healthy and eating right are great ways to support good brain health. Fatty deposits in your blood stream may affect your brain and it is important to eat right and stay physically fit as well as mentally fit.

Keep in Touch

Try to take some time each week to catch up with old friends and share stories of the old days. This works in two ways. First, you are using your brain to remember these past events, and second, you can begin to spot problem areas if you are having trouble remembering certain events.

Although forgetfulness is associated with old age, it doesn’t have to be. Don’t let your brain sit dormant for years. Start using it now and keep your mind sharp. You don’t have to sit idly by, waiting for the inevitable. Take your future in your hands now so that you can keep your past alive.
