Placer Healthy Kids Provides Health Insurance for Children and Youth in Placer County

Auburn, CA – Free or low-cost health insurance is available for children ages prenatal to 18 in Placer County through a program called Placer Healthy Kids. The program, which is provided by First 5 Placer and the Placer Children’s Health Initiative Coalition, serves children and youth who are not eligible for public programs like Medi-Cal or Healthy Families, and do not have access to employer-based coverage.

“With the economic downturn and state budget crisis, First 5 Placer anticipates more families will lose health insurance and be left with limited resources to pay for medical care for their children,” says Janice LeRoux, executive director of First 5 Placer. “Our goal is that no child in Placer County will go without health care coverage.” Research shows that uninsured children miss school more frequently, resulting in decreased performance and loss of state revenue for local school districts.

First 5 Placer pays the premiums for Placer County children ages prenatal through 5, and the administrative costs for Family Resource Centers that help parents enroll their children ages 0 to 5 in Medi-Cal, Healthy Families and Placer Healthy Kids. Coverage for children ages 6 to 18 is provided by the Placer Children’s Health Initiative Coalition, with funding from The California Endowment, The Motherlode Foundation and Health Net, but the Children’s Health Initiative Coalition is working to raise additional funds to create more openings. Coverage for 6 – 18 year olds is currently at capacity with 57 children and youth with a waiting list. Coverage for 6 – 18 year olds is currently at capacity, and any new children over age 5 to the program will be placed on a waiting list. It costs $1,229 to provide coverage for each child for a year.

Service organizations and other groups can arrange for a presentation about the program. There is also a fundraiser planned for the spring of 2009. About Placer CHI Coalition:

The Placer CHI Coalition is a group of stakeholders committed to improving the health and well-being of children in Placer County by establishing a children’s health initiative (CHI). The CHI will provide comprehensive health, dental and vision coverage to uninsured children, ages 0-18 whose families’ incomes are below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (about $60,000 per year for a family of 4).

The CHI Coalition is supported in part by the First 5 Placer County Children and Families Commission. The primary purpose of the First 5 Placer Children and Family Commission is to use Proposition 10 funds to fund local programs that support early development of children prenatal through age 5 and their families in Placer County.
